I know from experience, finding the perfect lip is no easy task. Let alone trying to find the perfect lip for daytime AND a whole other perfect one for night—impossible. This becomes especially difficult when you put someone like me, who is lip color obsessed, on the job, but I do have a few faithful favorites I thought I’d tell you about.
So, there’s basic Chapstick, lip balm, tinted lip balm, lip gloss, lipstick, lip stain—to name just a few–and I’m here to state the obvious, not all lip products are made equal. But for now, before I get ahead of myself, let’s talk about what I find to be the perfect daytime lip, a tinted lip balm.
There is truly nothing better than a good tinted lip balm. It’s subtle, because sometimes a lipstick is a little too much of a commitment for me, I don’t have to apply it ‘correctly’, meaning I don’t need a mirror to apply it and when I inevitably color outside my lip-lines, the clean-up is effortless. It just gives off that subtle, healthy look with zero hassle—perfect for every day. A tinted balm becomes my most coveted item in the colder months because it’ll hydrate the lips while giving them a little color which I, as an anti-matte lip person, love.
A very sheer red tint, a level up from their more subtle pink, rose. Smells/tastes like cherry Chapstick, need I say more?
Perfect, lightly-pigmented dusty-rose that is packed with shea butter so your lips will look/feel super moisturized without any stickiness. Gives off a glossier finish than some of the others on this list which adds a little extra kick and the color, although subtle, lasts an impressively long time.
Ready for this one? This little stick is meant for lips and cheeks and acts as both a lip color and liner for ultimate lazy-girl simplicity. It’s a creamy lip so it isn’t necessarily a balm but it looks and feels like one to me, so I’m adding it to the list! Gives off a beautiful, luxurious and slightly exaggerated natural color that is buildable so you’re in full control of the pigment. Look polished without looking overdone.
This is the cult-favorite for many reasons but, let’s go with the most important first, it has SPF, so it protects and treats the lips, which is pretty revolutionary. This is the first product I ever bought from Sephora when I was like 12, and I’ve continued to buy it over and over again and eagerly buy each new shade as they come out. It’s a guaranteed love for those who love a dewy, natural look and want long-term payoffs too.
It has the look of a smudged lipstick but the feel of a soft balm, what could be better? This stuff glides on so easily, is super lightweight and leaves lips feeling hydrated but also feels like you have nothing on. I love it because I can make it transition from a day to night lip just by reapplying. Apply once for a blotted, light stain then again for more bold coverage.
Now this one is great because it looks different on everyone. It’s by far the least pigmented on this list but it just perfectly enhances your natural lip color and suits every skin tone. It gives a subtle shine with a soft, rosy tint and I love it under a more matte lipstick for extra hydration and shine. I use it as a base, on its own, or as a top coat over another lip and I rarely leave home without it.
